Up in the air above a large sunflower, a cheerful cartoon dragonfly hovers with big round eyes, two curly antennae and a happy smile. Its striped, segmented tail trails down to the left, and the four wings have simple vein lines that are easy to fill in. The sunflower takes up most of the page below, with a wide center full of small oval seeds and a ring of big petals. Two large leaves and a thick stem reach out along the bottom. A round sun with oval rays shines in the upper right corner. Large shapes and bold outlines suit preschoolers and early elementary kids. Bright yellow petals around a brown center look great, and blue or purple wings will help the dragonfly stand out from the flower. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the sunflower petals, the sun center and its rays, and the dragonfly head with sunny yellow, leaving the background white.
- 2Fill the two lower sun rays on the right with golden yellow to add a little warmth.
- 3Color the round middle of the sunflower brown, filling in each small seed dot.
- 4Fill the two leaves and the flower stem with leaf green.
- 5Paint the dragonfly's top and side wings with pale blue, and its tail and body segments with bright blue and royal blue, alternating the segments.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading at the base of the petals and the edges of the leaves to make the drawing look more lively.
