Dragonfly Over the Pond: Printable Insects Scene

This cartoon dragonfly has big sparkly eyes, long lashes, curled antennae and a happy smile, and it swoops diagonally over a pond with its long segmented tail trailing down to the left. Four large wings full of vein lines give kids lots of little sections to fill in. The water below has soft ripple rings, a blooming water lily on the left and two round lily pads, one small and one large. Tall cattails and grassy leaves frame both sides, and a few puffy bushes line the far shore. Soft blues and purples would suit the wings, or try a shimmering green body and warm brown cattails for contrast. The free PDF prints at home and there's no sign-up. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the wings: fill the four dragonfly wings with pale sky blue, leaving the thin dark vein lines visible.
- 2Color the pond water ripples in ocean blue, then fill the lily pads at the bottom and the two small pads on the right with leaf green.
- 3Fill the background bushes with forest green, then color the grass blades on both sides with leaf green and lime green.
- 4Color the dragonfly head and thorax in lime green, and the abdomen with alternating lemon yellow, lime green and forest green bands, leaving the thin legs white.
- 5Color the cattails in chestnut brown, leaving their thin stalks white. Fill the pink lily flower with soft pink, add golden yellow to the bud and light orange to its tip.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shade of the same color along the edges of the wings and lily pads, and keep the eyes, shine spots and the sky white.
