One big, grinning lizard with a spotted back and wide, round eyes strides over the sand, and two tiny baby lizards scurry along behind. The free printable desert scene includes a tall saguaro cactus with several arms, a smaller cactus far off and a prickly pear cactus on the right. Rolling dunes sit in the back, a big sun with long rays shines above, and rocks, small pebbles and spiky desert plants are scattered up front. The large spots on each lizard are fun to fill in and give kids lots of room to practice. Bright lime green with orange or yellow spots works well, along with sandy tan dunes and a golden sun. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big lizard's head, baby lizards' bodies and feet, and the lime green spots and tail using a lime green crayon.
- 2Fill the tall cactus, the side cacti and the prickly pears with a cactus green, leaving the small white highlight lines on the cactus ribs.
- 3Color the sun disc sunny yellow, then add the sand dunes and the sand patch under the babies in sandy tan.
- 4Use bright orange for the spots on the tail and the bigger spot near the baby lizards, and sunny yellow for the small tail spots.
- 5Shade the rocks with cool gray, color the grass tufts deep forest green, and fill the lizard belly and lower jaw with pale yellow.
- 6Finish with coral pink for the tongues and the mouth, keeping the eye whites and the cactus highlights white. Optional: add a little darker lime green along the edges of the lizard bodies for depth.
