Down on the ground, a happy snail with big round eyes, two long antennae and a cheerful smile slides along beneath two large poppy flowers. Its shell is a big swirl with wide curved bands, so little ones can change colors from one ring to the next. Each poppy has ruffled petals and a round center circled by tiny stamens. Two closed, fuzzy buds droop on curved stems, and jagged leaves and tufts of grass crowd in around the snail, with a few small pebbles and dots on the ground. Everything is big and clear, which works for preschoolers and early elementary kids. Red or orange poppy petals look good with a soft brown or purple swirl on the shell, and green takes care of the leaves and grass. This one is a free printable. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big poppy petals and both flower buds in poppy red, leaving small gaps so the lines still show through.
- 2Fill the upper bud with tangerine orange for a bit of variety, then color the poppy centers in lime green.
- 3Color the leaves, grass, and flower stems in leaf green, using bright green on the middle leaves for contrast.
- 4Fill the snail shell with chocolate brown, following the spiral lines, and color the snail body and head in pale yellow.
- 5Add golden yellow to the tips of the snail's antennae and keep the small dots on the body and the background white.
- 6Optional: deepen the shell edges with a slightly darker brown to make it pop, and leave the gray pebbles lightly shaded.
