Autumn Calendar Squirrel Grinning with an Acorn on a Log

Sitting upright on a fallen log, a cheerful squirrel holds a big acorn in both paws and grins with its mouth open. Its fluffy tail curls up behind it, and its ears have little tufts on top. Maple and oak leaves drift down around it, and a large tree trunk with a knot rises on the right. Down at the bottom are a pile of acorns at the end of the log, a spotted mushroom, tufts of grass and a few fallen leaves, with small bushes in the background. Big shapes mixed with small details suit kids who like some variety. Warm orange and reddish-brown fit the squirrel's fur, and red and yellow work for the maple leaves. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the squirrel: fill the tail, head, body, arms and ears with burnt orange, and use light orange on the lighter fur around the face and cheeks.
- 2Color the squirrel's belly, chest and feet cream, and fill the inner part of the ears with soft pink. Leave the eye whites, teeth and the little shine spots white.
- 3Fill the log and the tree trunk with warm brown, then add caramel tan to the log ends and the rings on the log.
- 4Color the acorns chestnut brown, with caramel tan on the ground acorns, and give the held acorn its golden cap details.
- 5Paint the leaves: make the big maple leaves bright red, the oak leaves tangerine, the falling leaves golden yellow and lemon yellow, and the bottom leaves lemon yellow.
- 6Finish with the grass and bushes in grass green and forest green, the mushroom cap in bright red with white dots left white, and the stem in cream. Optional: add a little darker shading on the squirrel's tail and the tree trunk for depth.
