A cheerful little steam engine with a big round smiling face chugs down a railway track, and instead of smoke it puffs out a trail of hearts. Behind it, three open freight cars each carry one large heart, leaving lots of room to color. Rolling hills fill the background, with a leafy tree on the right, a few round bushes and small tufts of grass beside the tracks. Wide wheels, a little cab window and a striped front grille give kids simple shapes to fill in, and the hearts are easy for smaller hands. It's a free printable that suits preschoolers, early elementary kids, or a Valentine's Day activity. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big hills, bushes and grass in lime green and grass green, leaving the sky white.
- 2Fill the hearts in the sky and over the smokestack and cars with cherry red, then color the tree crown in forest green and its trunk in caramel brown.
- 3Color the engine body in bright blue and the boiler band and front bumper in golden yellow, keeping the cab roof cherry red.
- 4Shade the wheels and smokestack in charcoal gray, and the cars in caramel brown with the rims in golden yellow.
- 5Color the face in light gray, add the porthole in pale blue and the smile in coral pink, leaving the eye areas white for a happy look.
- 6Optional: Add a little slate gray or darker shading on the track ties and under the wheels for depth.
