This steam engine has a big round smiling face and rolls along a railroad track, drawn with easy, bold lines. Puffy smoke curls from the tall chimney into one large cloud, with two smaller clouds floating close by. Up in the top corner, a happy sun with a smiling face and short rays shines down. Look closer at the engine and you'll spot a cab with a square window, a rounded boiler with curved bands, a striped front grill, and big spoked wheels joined by a connecting rod. Thick outlines and roomy shapes help preschoolers and early elementary kids practice staying inside the lines. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sky blue smoke cloud, the two small clouds and the sun's background: color the clouds sky blue and leave the sky white.
- 2Fill the round engine face with light gray, and color the smile coral pink, keeping the eye whites white.
- 3Paint the boiler middle and cab back wall in royal blue and grass green, then color the cab roof, chimney and front panel stripes bright red.
- 4Color the big wheel rims and the middle and right wheel rims in bright blue, then fill the spokes with bright red and the hubs with pale yellow or golden yellow.
- 5Add golden yellow to the chimney cap, boiler front band, dome, connecting rod and sun rays, and color the rail ties brown and the track medium gray.
- 6Optional: add a light shading stroke in a slightly darker shade along the boiler and wheels for depth.
