Mountain Tunnel and Waterfall Scene With a Steam Train

Out of a stone-arch tunnel comes a steam locomotive with a big round smiling face, towing two passenger cars. The engine has a tall funnel, a round headlamp on top of the boiler, six wheels, and a slatted cowcatcher up front. The tracks curve down toward the bottom of the page. Around it you'll find rocky hills, tall pine trees, leafy bushes, small stones, and a waterfall that tumbles down the cliff into a little stream on the right. A winding path trails up the mountainside. Younger kids can enjoy the large engine face and open hill spaces, while older kids can spend time on the rocks, trees and water. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big grassy hills, bushes and the grass along the stream in lime green, leaving the sky and the foam by the waterfall white.
- 2Color the pine trees in forest green, adding a touch of leaf green on the lower branches for depth.
- 3Fill the tunnel arch stones in beige and the tunnel opening in charcoal gray, then paint the cliffs and rocks in medium gray and light gray.
- 4Paint the waterfall and the river in sky blue and deep blue, and color the railway sleepers in warm brown.
- 5Color the train body, carriages and bumper in bright red, the chimney, dome and cab roof in charcoal gray, and the engine face in pale gray, keeping the eye whites and headlight ring white.
- 6Optional: add a bit of darker shading along the tunnel edges and under the train for a little extra depth.
