With a big grin, a turtle pushes through the finish-line ribbon strung between two wooden posts. Behind him, a wide-eyed rabbit looks back with his mouth hanging open, and a few short motion lines by his face show just how shocked he is. The race runs along a winding dirt path lined with grass tufts, small round pebbles, bushy hedges and leafy trees. The turtle's shell is split into clear segments, so there are plenty of shapes to fill in. Preschoolers through early elementary kids can enjoy this free printable, and it pairs well with a reading of the tortoise and the hare. Greens and yellows look good on the shell, red on the ribbon, and soft gray or pink on the rabbit's ears and fluffy tail. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big green areas: fill the tree canopies, bushes and grass with bright green, leaving the tree highlights white.
- 2Color the turtle's head, front leg and back legs bright green, then fill the rabbit's body, head and ears with light gray.
- 3Fill the turtle's shell plates with dark brown, working plate by plate and keeping the shell outlines neat.
- 4Color the turtle's belly stripes and feet golden yellow, and paint the wooden posts and tree trunks caramel brown.
- 5Add soft pink inside the rabbit's ears, a sage green patch on its back and cream white on its chin. Keep the eye shines and open mouth white.
- 6Finish with the finish ribbon in bright red and leave the background white. Optional: add a little darker shading under the shell and the rabbit to make it pop.
