Squirrel and Owl Sharing an Oak Tree

Sitting on a thick oak branch, a big-eyed owl with tufted ears has its feathered wings folded at its sides and a scalloped pattern across its round belly. Down below on another branch, a small squirrel with a curly tail holds an acorn in both paws. Oak leaves are scattered over the page and clusters of acorns hang from the branches, so there is lots to color. The shapes are large and the lines are clean, which suits preschoolers and early elementary kids working on pencil control, and it fits a fall classroom activity nicely. Orange, gold and red look right on the oak leaves, and warm browns and soft tan go well on the owl's feathers. This free printable is a calm, cozy autumn scene kids can finish at their own pace. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the owl's face, belly and the squirrel's belly using light beige, leaving the owl's big eye whites bright white.
- 2Color the squirrel's body, ears and hind leg with bright orange, and the squirrel's chest with a softer peach orange.
- 3Fill the owl's wings, head tufts and the tree branch with chestnut brown, and the acorns with honey orange.
- 4Color the owl's beak, feet and talons golden yellow.
- 5Fill the larger and smaller oak leaves with leafy green, and the lighter leaves with lime green, leaving the leaf veins and highlights white.
- 6Optional: add a few small strokes of darker shading on the owl's wings and the leaves to make them look more three-dimensional.
