Sunny Face Mandala with Lacy Scalloped Edge

Big sparkly eyes, a tiny curved nose, round rosy cheeks and a wide smile give this sun its cheerful look. It sits at the heart of a round mandala, where pointed triangle rays take turns with wavy, flame-like ones to form a pretty star shape. A thin oval frame circles the sun, and past it a scalloped edge with small circles looks a bit like a lace doily. Bold outlines and open spaces are easy for younger kids, while the wavy rays and little circles keep older ones busy. Print it at home or in class. Yellow for the pointed rays and orange for the wavy ones works nicely, plus pink cheeks and a mix of colors on the border circles. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sun face, the pointed rays and the scalloped outer edge: color them all golden yellow, leaving the small dots on the edge white.
- 2Fill the large open background between the rays and inside the outer ring with sky blue, working around the yellow rays.
- 3Color the wavy flame shapes between the rays in orange, including the curly ones at the top, sides and bottom.
- 4Add soft pink to the two round cheeks on the face, and keep the eyes white with black pupils for a cheerful look.
- 5Optional: add a few light strokes of a darker shade near the edges of the rays and flames to give them a little depth.
