Thirsty Lion Drinking From a Pond Beside a Palm Tree

Crouched low at the edge of a pond, a big maned lion dips his pink tongue into the water and sends ripples across the surface. His wide eyes look down at the water, and his tail curls up behind him with a fluffy tuft at the end. Tall cattails, grassy bushes and smooth rocks surround the pond. Behind him, a tall palm tree leans in from the right, an acacia stands on the left, and rolling hills fill the distance. Three birds fly across a sky with puffy clouds. The thick, swirly mane leaves lots of space for careful crayon or pencil work, and the ripples and cattails suit bigger strokes. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the pond: fill the water with pond blue, leaving little white sparkles and ripple lines so the water still looks bright.
- 2Color the lion's body and back in golden yellow, keeping a few white highlights along the back, and use light orange for the face.
- 3Use reddish brown for the mane, the ears, the tail tip and the shaded parts of the lion's chin and legs.
- 4Paint the sky clouds in pale sky blue, the mountains in slate blue, and the bushes, grass and palm leaves in bright green and leaf green.
- 5Add tan to the rocks at the pond edge and caramel to the palm trunk, leaving the palm trunk highlights white.
- 6Finish with coral pink for the tongue, and keep the eye whites white. Optional: add a little darker blue at the bottom of the pond for depth.
