Trio of Dragonflies Gliding Over the Pond

Three friendly dragonflies glide above a calm pond, each a different size, from a large one at the upper left down to a tiny one on the right. All have big round eyes and curled antennae, plus long segmented tails and veined wings with lots of shapes to fill in. Tall cattails and leafy reeds stand along both sides of the water, and soft bushes line the far bank. Two lily pads float on the rippling water up front. The wide open wing spaces work for chunky crayons, and the veins and ripples are a good match for markers or colored pencils. Soft blues and purples would suit the wings, with bright green lily pads and brown cattails. This free printable is nice for a nature lesson or a relaxed afternoon of coloring. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the dragonfly wings: fill every wing with pale sky blue, leaving the thin dark veins uncolored.
- 2Color the head and body of the top dragonfly lime green, and the head and body of the middle dragonfly soft pink.
- 3Fill the tails and stripes of the dragonflies with leaf green, and the tail tip of the top dragonfly with lime green.
- 4Color the cattails and the pond bank warm brown, then fill the grass blades and the bushes behind the pond with leaf green and grass green.
- 5Paint the lily pads with grass green and the water ripples with water blue and bright blue, keeping the small white highlights on the grass blades white.
- 6Optional: add a little darker forest green to the grass at the bottom left for shading, and leave the eye whites and wing highlights white for a sparkly finish.
