Tiny Pirate Island with Cave, Dock and Rowboat

In the middle of rippling waves sits a tiny island with a rounded rocky hill and an open cave entrance right at its center. Two tall palm trees lean over it, each with coconuts hanging below the fronds. On the right, a tattered flag with a skull and crossbones flies from a tall pole. Toward the front, a wooden dock with rope-wrapped posts stretches to the shore, and a small rowboat with an oar floats next to it. The sky holds a round sun, a puffy cloud and a few seagulls. There are big spaces and small ones here, so it suits kids who like broad coloring as well as fine detail. Sandy yellow works for the beach, warm browns for the dock and boat, and bright greens for the palm leaves. Black and gray on the flag will help the skull stand out against blue sky. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the sun golden yellow and the cloud sky blue, leaving the small splashes near the boat white.
- 2Fill the hill, the palm fronds and the bushes with grass green, and use lime green for the outer palm leaves and the coconut at the bottom left.
- 3Color the palm trunks, the cave arch, the dock planks and the top of the boat with wood brown, then use chocolate brown for the dock posts, rope, oar and the inside of the boat.
- 4Fill the cave opening with dark brown, the rocks with light gray and slate gray, and the water under the boat and the splash by the dock with ocean blue and sky blue.
- 5Color the flag and the flagpole black, and leave the skull and crossbones white so they stand out.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading on the shadowed side of the hill and the trunks to give them more depth.
