Standing on a tree stump, a big-eyed little owl is all dressed up as a wizard. Its pointed hat is covered in stars and has a floppy tip with a star charm dangling at the end, and a flowing cape is fastened at the neck with a round star-shaped clasp. One wing is raised, holding a star-tipped magic wand with small sparkles around it. The round tummy shows scalloped feathers, the wings are tucked at the sides and the beak is open in a happy smile. Below, the stump has growth rings and bark lines, and leafy plant sprigs poke up on both sides. Large shapes and clean lines make it easy for young colorers, and it prints quickly for a quiet afternoon. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the cape and wizard hat: color the big purple areas of the cape and the hat with royal purple, leaving the white highlights on the hat untouched.
- 2Color the owl's wings, head feathers and the hand holding the wand in warm brown, keeping the tips of the feathers neat.
- 3Fill the owl's round belly and face with cream, then leave the big eye whites bright white.
- 4Color the hat band, beak, feet and the stump top and sides with golden orange and light tan, then add bright yellow to the stars on the hat and the wand star.
- 5Finish with leaf green on the little plants and grass at the bottom. Optional: add a few darker purple lines on the cape folds for depth.
