Head tilted upward and mouth open in a big smile, this cheerful baby sea turtle glides through the water with sparkling round eyes. Large patterned plates and a segmented border make up the shell, and spots and circles cover the flippers and head. A small school of tiny fish swims together above the turtle. Wavy lines run across the top of the page, light rays reach down from the surface, and a few bubbles float close to the turtle. Small hands will manage the big shell sections easily, and the spotted flippers give older kids more detail. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the turtle's domed shell plates with caramel brown, leaving the thin white lines between them.
- 2Color the outer shell rim and the edge plates with dark brown, then fill the head, body and flippers with lime green.
- 3Color the round belly underneath with pale yellow, and the open smile with raspberry pink.
- 4Add the spots on the head and flippers using grass green and deep green, leaving small white dots as highlights.
- 5Color the bubbles with sky blue and keep the eye whites white, adding a dark pupil in each eye.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading along the edges of the shell and flippers to give the turtle more depth.
