In this scene, a big smiling turtle leads two little hatchlings down a dirt path beside a pond. The grown-up has long eyelashes, a wide open smile, and a large shell of rounded patches, with spots dotting her legs. The two small turtles trail right behind, each with a big grin and a tiny patterned shell. Back by the water, a lily blooms next to some flat lily pads, and tall cattails and grass frame both sides of the page. There are pebbles on the path and bushes along the far bank. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the pond water in sky blue, keeping the lily pads and the background sky white.
- 2Color the big shell plates in medium brown, and fill the shell rim and bottom band with golden yellow.
- 3Fill the mom turtle's head, the baby turtles' bodies and heads with light green, and the grassy bank with bright green.
- 4Color the bushes, reeds and lily pads in grass green, the lily flower petals and center in coral pink, and the cattail tops in medium brown.
- 5Add pale yellow to the claws and toes, dark brown to the small shell edges, and leave the eye shines white for sparkle.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker green along the edges of the pond and grass for extra depth.
