A big, smiling mother sea turtle rests on the sand by the water's edge. She tips her head down to watch five tiny hatchlings crawling across the beach in front of her, each one heading a different way. Every baby has a patterned shell, round eyes and a little smile. Gentle waves roll in on the right, palm fronds frame the top corners and bottom left, and a few seashells, a spiral shell and small pebbles are scattered over the sand. Large shell sections and honeycomb-patterned flippers give older kids plenty to work on, while the babies are simple enough for little hands. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the ocean band and the waves on the right in sea blue, and leave the top sky and the white foam along the shoreline blank.
- 2Fill the beach sand, the sand under the mom turtle and the sand around the hatchlings with soft yellow, keeping the small sand dots near the babies white.
- 3Color the mom turtle's big shell plates in warm brown, the edge plates in caramel tan, and her head and body in lime green, leaving the eye shines white.
- 4Use leaf green for the mom turtle's flippers and the spots on her head, then fill the little hatchlings' heads in lime green and their shells in warm brown with one dark brown center plate.
- 5Paint the palm leaves and grass in leaf green, leaving the white highlights on the leaves, and color the seashells peach and rose pink.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes of warm brown or leaf green along the shell edges and flipper scales for a little depth.
