Sunflower Picnic with Two Matryoshka Dolls

A big nesting doll and a small one sit side by side on a checkered picnic blanket outdoors. They have round rosy cheeks, sweet smiles and headscarves tied in a bow at the chin. Large flowers and leafy sprigs decorate their rounded bodies, with scalloped trim along the edges. In front are a woven picnic basket with a handle, a plate of sandwich halves and three apples. A leafy tree stands on the left, three tall sunflowers grow on the right, and bushes and grass tufts fill the ground. Kids will find lots of petals to color in the flower patterns. Warm red and yellow on the big doll's scarf and flower, plus golden yellow sunflowers with brown centers, would be lovely. Print the free PDF at home and keep a few extra copies handy. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big green areas: fill the grass, bushes, tree leaves and the sunflower leaves with grass green, leaving the sky and background white.
- 2Color the tree trunk warm brown, then fill the dolls' headscarves and hair and the sunflower centers with dark brown.
- 3Fill both dolls' faces and the cream patterns on their aprons with peach cream, keeping the eye whites white and adding rosy cheeks in the same peach cream.
- 4Use tomato red for the dolls' dresses, bows, flowers, the basket handle and the three apples, and salmon pink for the checkered tablecloth squares.
- 5Add bright yellow to the scarf trims and the flower centers, and honey gold to the basket lid and weave. Leave the plate and sandwich bread white.
- 6Optional: add a darker shade of each color on one side of the dolls and apples to make them look rounder.
