Two cheerful dragonflies swoop through the air here, both with big round eyes, a little smile and two curly antennae. The upper one tilts down to the left, with its long striped tail pointing toward the lower left. Beneath it the second dragonfly tilts the opposite way, its tail trailing to the right. Each has four big rounded wings filled with leaf-like vein lines that are fun to shade. A curving swirl loops behind them to show where they've flown. Tall blades of grass cover the bottom of the page, with one cattail on the left and another on the right. Soft turquoise and lavender wings go nicely with bright green body stripes, and little ones can pick their own browns for the cattails. It's a free PDF, so printing a few spare copies is easy. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the wings of both dragonflies: fill them with sky blue, leaving the thin dark vein lines unpainted.
- 2Color the round heads with lime green and the small necks just behind them with golden yellow, keeping the eye whites and tiny shines white.
- 3Paint the long abdomens: royal blue for the first dragonfly's tail with bright blue on its middle segments, and purple with lavender segments for the second dragonfly.
- 4Add the grass with leaf green and lime green on the tallest blades, then fill the two cattails with chocolate brown.
- 5Leave the background and the empty grass blades white for a clean, airy look.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading along the edges of the wings and the abdomens to make them pop.
