Two young hikers make their way up a rocky slope toward a smoking volcano. The girl wears a cap and a ponytail, and the boy has short tousled hair. They both carry backpacks, hold trekking poles and wear sturdy hiking boots, and they're smiling as they head uphill. A small bird flies in the upper left, and a puff of smoke rises from the crater. Two smaller mountain peaks stand in the distance with bushy clouds or shrubs below them, and rocks and grass tufts fill the foreground. Clear lines and mid-sized shapes suit kids who like some detail but still want room for crayons. Warm oranges and reds in the crater and soft grays for the smoke would look good. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Leave the sky and the puffs of smoke white, then fill the big volcano cone with mocha brown and the crater lava with orange.
- 2Color the distant mountains light blue and the hikers' skin, faces, arms and legs with peach, leaving the small sock highlights and shoe soles white.
- 3Fill the hikers' clothes: the girl's cap and backpack in pink, her shirt in purple, the boy's shirt in bright red, and his shorts and backpack in bright blue.
- 4Color the bushes and grass with lime green and grass green, and the path ground with peach or a light tan tone.
- 5Fill the rocks in light gray and stone gray, then color the boy's shoes and the girl's other shoe with chocolate brown and purple.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes along the volcano and rocks for a little depth, and finish with the small bird in bright blue.
