Waving From a Hot Air Balloon Above the City
Coloring guide
Two kids, a boy and a girl, lean out of a woven basket and wave as their hot air balloon drifts over a hilly riverside town. The balloon has patterned bands: circles near the top, zigzags through the middle and a row of small dots near the bottom. Two little sandbags hang from the sides of the basket. Down below are a tall church steeple, rows of tiled rooftops, trees, and arched stone bridges over a winding river with two small sailboats. A castle-like hilltop town sits far off, with puffy clouds and a few birds overhead. The balloon panels are large and simple, while the houses and rooftops give older kids more to work on. Bright reds, yellows and blues will stand out against a soft blue sky and green hillside. Download the free PDF for a calm, creative break. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sky: fill the open sky around the balloon and the river water with sky blue, and leave the clouds white.
- 2Color the green hills and all the trees with grass green, adding olive green to a few darker shadowy trees behind the girl.
- 3Paint the balloon top and sides with golden yellow, tomato red, and grass green stripes, using the yellow scalloped cap at the top.
- 4Fill the middle band of the balloon with royal blue and slate purple panels, then color the lower stripes in tomato red, orange, and sky blue.
- 5Color the basket bags and church tower with cream beige, the basket rim with chocolate brown, and the boy's hair with caramel brown.
- 6Optional: add soft pink to the girl's sleeve and a little extra pale blue shading under the clouds for a softer look.
