Waving Pilot in Helicopter Above Campfire and Pines

Kids will probably notice the pilot's cheerful wave first. He's wearing a headset and leaning out of a helicopter that hovers over a pine forest. A long line hangs from the bottom of the helicopter down to a big striped bucket swinging in the air. Straight below, a campfire burns on a ring of rocks, with stacked logs and tall flames. Layered pine trees and leafy bushes crowd both sides, and behind them you'll find a calm lake, a faraway shoreline and rolling mountains. Large shapes and clear outlines work well for preschoolers and early elementary kids. Bright red and yellow suit the flames, deep greens the trees, and soft blue the lake. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big background: fill the distant mountains and hills with royal blue, and the lake with sky blue and light blue, leaving the small white shore spots white.
- 2Color the pine trees and bushes: use forest green for the darker trees and bottom bushes, grass green for the middle and side trees, and mint green or lime green for a few lighter sections.
- 3Paint the helicopter body in bright red and the rotor blades, tail rotor, and skids in charcoal gray, keeping the nose, tail boom stripe, and skid lines white.
- 4Fill the bucket with orange, the campfire flames with tangerine and golden yellow, and the fire stones with warm gray.
- 5Add the pilot with peach skin, a golden yellow helmet, slate blue headset, and light blue cockpit windows, leaving the eye whites white.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading on the trees and the bucket edges with a deeper tone of the same color for extra depth.
