Wide-Eyed Halloween Owl with Moon and Bats

A little owl with huge eyes sits on a twisty tree branch, both feet wrapped around it, while a big round moon with crater circles glows right behind its head. Three smiling bats flutter in the top corners of the page, and loose leaves drift down on either side. Look closely and you'll find tufted ears, a tiny pointed beak, a chest of scalloped feathers and layered wings folded at its sides. The thick branch runs along the bottom and left edge with a few knotholes, so there's plenty of bark to shade. Kids who like a mix of big open spaces and small details will enjoy this free printable. A soft golden yellow suits the moon, warm browns work for the feathers, and purple or dark gray bats will stand out against the pale sky. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the full moon in pale yellow, leaving the small craters for later.
- 2Color the owl's face, belly and the body area in cream beige, keeping the eye whites white.
- 3Fill the wings, tail feathers and the bats' tree-side details in deep brown, and the tree trunk and branches in caramel brown.
- 4Add golden yellow to the moon craters and amber to the owl's beak and feet, leaving the eye shine spots white.
- 5Color the bats in dark gray and the falling leaves in burnt orange, coral red and golden yellow, mixing a few for variety.
- 6Optional: add a little shading with a darker shade of the same color along the wing edges and branch undersides.
