One eye shut in a wink, a young pirate captain peers through a spyglass with one boot propped on the edge of a wooden boat. He wears a big tricorn hat with a skull and crossbones, a knotted bandana underneath, a loose shirt with rolled sleeves, a belt with a buckle, cuffed boots and a cutlass at his hip. Part of a sail rises behind him, and a seagull soars near a few puffy clouds. Wavy lines of water stretch out to a small sun on the horizon. The hat, sail and boat are big shapes that little hands can handle, while the waves and sword hilt give older kids some detail. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sea, sky blue for the waves, and the sun in pale blue. Leave the sky and the white clouds' inside areas white.
- 2Color the boat hull and rails in warm brown, with tan orange on the railing and bow tip, and medium brown on the planks.
- 3Fill the sail in cream, and color the pirate's face and hands in peach skin, leaving the eye whites white.
- 4Color the pirate's pants in deep blue and navy blue, the boots in dark brown, and the belt in medium brown with a tan orange buckle.
- 5Add the bandana in bright red, the hat and vest in charcoal black and navy blue, and the spyglass in golden yellow and warm brown.
- 6Optional: finish with the white shirt and the skull left white, and add a little shading on the pants and hull for depth.
