This rough-hewn wooden cross has visible grain lines and knots on both the post and the crossbeam. A leafy vine winds up the post, with large daisy-style flowers beside it. Tulip-shaped buds and lots of pointed leaves crowd the bottom of the cross. Up in the right corner, a smiling butterfly with curled antennae and patterned wings flutters near the crossbeam. Bold outlines and roomy shapes help kids who are still building coloring skills, and the wood texture gives older children something to shade. Warm browns suit the cross, soft pinks and yellows the blooms, and bright purple the wings. It is a calm pick for a Good Friday lesson, a quiet Sunday school table or a thoughtful afternoon at home. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the wooden cross, both the crossbar and the upright post, in wood brown, and leave the small holes and knots white.
- 2Fill the stems, vines and all the leaves, including the big leaves at the bottom, in leaf green.
- 3Color the tulips and the upper wing of the butterfly in rose pink, leaving the little highlight shapes white.
- 4Paint the butterfly's wings in violet purple and lilac, and its body in golden yellow, adding small sunny yellow spots on the wings.
- 5Color the centers of the daisies in sunny yellow and keep their petals white, along with the background.
- 6Optional: add a slightly darker wood brown along one side of the cross post for a bit of depth.
