Young Turtle Face With Honeycomb Scales and Seaweed

Big shiny eyes, long lashes and a wide friendly smile greet you from this young sea turtle looking straight out of the page. Honeycomb-shaped scales cover the head, and one flipper stretches forward with more scales to color. A bit of the shell shows behind the head, drawn with large geometric panels. On the right, small round bubbles rise, while wavy seaweed and a little coral line the bottom edge. Thick, clean outlines and roomy open spaces suit preschoolers and early elementary kids, and all those tiny scales give older children something to chew on. Soft greens and teals look good on the head and flipper, with a warm brown or golden shell and pale blue bubbles to finish the underwater feel. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the belly and neck: color the lower body and neck with pale yellow, leaving the background white.
- 2Fill the head, snout and front flipper with yellow green, keeping the eye whites and the small highlights in the eyes white.
- 3Color the shell and the top of the head with medium green, then add dark green to the shell plates and the big honeycomb scales on the flippers.
- 4Use coral pink for the open smile and orange for the coral at the bottom left, and color the bubbles sky blue.
- 5Finish with the seaweed in medium green and leaf green, and add a few darker lines to the scales to make them pop. Optional: shade the edges of the shell with a little extra dark green.
