Adult Dragonfly and Nymph on a Pond Reed

One tall reed holds two dragonflies in this sweet pond scene, a grown one and a smaller nymph. The adult sits near the top with big round eyes, a friendly smile and four large veined wings spread wide, and its long segmented tail curves down along the stem. Lower down, the wide-eyed nymph clings to the same reed with its legs and looks up at the adult. Its chunky striped body ends in three little tail fins. A few curved grass blades, small floating bubbles, ripples in the water and a round lily pad at the bottom right fill out the page. Wing cells and the nymph's body bands give kids lots of small spaces to color. Soft blues and greens suit the adult's wings, and a muddy olive brown for the nymph shows how the two differ. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the reed stalks, the right reed leaf and the lily pad with grass green, leaving the background white.
- 2Fill the adult dragonfly's wings with pale blue, keeping the dark veins and the white edges as they are.
- 3Paint the dragonfly's chest with sky blue, its long tail and head with light blue, and the very tip of the tail with bright blue.
- 4Color the nymph's chest with emerald green, its body segments with yellow green, and its wings and tail with lime green.
- 5Add leaf green to the base of the left grass blade and the lower reed, then add light blue to the small bubbles.
- 6Optional: leave the eye whites and the small shine spots on the eyes white to make the faces sparkle.
