Under a leafy apple tree, a smiling mother hen sits on the grass with two round little chicks nestled against her feathered side. The chicks face each other as if chatting, while the hen looks out with big eyes, a small beak and a scalloped comb. Five apples hang from the branches among pointed leaves, and one more rests on the ground at the lower right. Grass tufts fill the foreground and a few patches grow behind the hen. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the apples: fill the apples on the tree and the one on the ground with bright red, leaving the small shine spots white.
- 2Color the tree leaves and grass in leaf green, and use forest green for the grass at the bottom left and right for some depth.
- 3Fill the hen's body and tail with tangerine orange, then add chestnut brown to the darker wing feathers and amber yellow to the golden feather tips.
- 4Color the two chicks in lemon yellow, keeping their eyes white with small black pupils, and add the beak and comb in amber yellow and bright red.
- 5Leave the tree trunk and background white so the drawing stands out, and keep the hen's eyes white with a bright highlight.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading in the chestnut brown wing areas and the leaves to make the picture feel more rounded.
