The first thing kids notice here is the happy face. A fluffy baby chick peeks out of a broken eggshell with its beak open in a big smile. It has large shiny eyes, tufted feathers around the cheeks and head, and two little wings resting on the jagged edge of the shell. The top half of the egg still sits on its head like a hat, with a crack line running across it. More cracks mark the bottom half, which rests on a small nest of straw drawn around the base. Bold, clean outlines and roomy spaces suit preschoolers and early elementary kids, and it fits spring or Easter activities. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the chick's fluffy head, body, and both wings golden yellow, leaving the eye whites bright white.
- 2Fill the top and bottom eggshell pieces with soft cream, keeping the crack lines as outlines.
- 3Color the beak bright orange and the open mouth soft pink.
- 4Fill the grass strands at the bottom and sides with warm tan.
- 5Fill the pupils solid black and leave the small eye shine spots white so the eyes look bright.
- 6Optional: add light strokes of a slightly darker yellow and tan to give the chick and grass some depth.
