At the edge of a pond, a young elephant dips its trunk into the water and sends ripples across the surface. Its big ears hang softly, its eyes look down at the water, and two small tusks peek out beside the trunk. Wavy reflections of the elephant show in the pond, with rocks, tall grass and cattails along the banks. Behind it, flat-topped acacia trees, grassy tufts, distant hills and puffy clouds fill out the savanna. Wrinkled skin, a tail tuft and wavy water lines give kids lots of detail. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the sky, the big water area and the reflections with sky blue, then add pale blue ripples across the water.
- 2Fill the elephant's head, ears, body, legs and trunk with light gray, leaving the top cloud shapes white.
- 3Color the tall grass and dry savanna ground with golden yellow, and the sandy shore by the water with ochre tan.
- 4Add slate blue to the distant hills, leaf green to the acacia tree leaves and bushes, and medium gray to the stones.
- 5Fill the tusks and toenails with cream, and color the cattails chestnut brown so the tips stay light.
- 6Optional: add a few darker charcoal gray lines under the elephant and along the water edge for a little depth.
