This detailed scene fills a shallow, rippling lake with a whole flock of flamingos. Up front, one tall bird looks off to the side with its neck in a graceful S-curve, while two others bend down to dip their beaks in the water. Farther back, one flamingo spreads its wings wide, another stands on one leg and a third tucks its head into its feathers. More flamingos fill the distance. Water plants, lily pads and rippling reflections dot the lake, and cattails and a water lily frame the bottom corners. Way off in the background you'll see palm trees, rolling hills, a mountain range and fluffy clouds. Kids who like detail will enjoy the mix of large and small areas. Soft pink and coral suit the feathers, black the beak tips and pale blue the water. It's a free printable that makes a good quiet-time activity at home or in class. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big water areas: color the whole pond and reflections with sky blue, leaving the lily pads and reeds for later.
- 2Fill the large flamingos, the front-left flamingo, and the other flamingos in rose pink, leaving the beaks and the white parts of the wings and bellies uncolored.
- 3Use light pink for the smaller flamingos tucked in the bushes and the head of the flamingo on the right, then add the lighter tones on the wings.
- 4Color the mountains with steel blue and the distant hills with deep teal, then fill the bushes with lime green and leaf green.
- 5Add the top clouds in pale blue and the palm trees in leaf green.
- 6Finish with turquoise on the reeds and cattails, then leave the lily flowers and the bottom edges white for a crisp finish. Optional: add a little darker sky blue in the water near the flamingo legs for depth.
