Six Birds in a Cherry Blossom Tree

One big cherry blossom tree takes over this page, and six little birds are perched among its flowery branches. Two round-headed lovebirds sit side by side near the middle, nearly touching beaks. Another bird, like a sparrow, rests on a limb at upper left, one sings from the top branches, a striped bird sits on the left and a small one perches on the right. A woodpecker clings to the trunk. Four butterflies flutter around, and petals drift down through the air. At the bottom there's a quiet scene with a lake, a little arched bridge, a mountain, pine trees and flowers beside the roots. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the tree trunk and thick branches: fill them with warm brown, leaving the cherry blossoms white.
- 2Color the two yellow birds at the top and the lovebirds' bodies with golden yellow, and fill the sparrow on the left with cream.
- 3Add blush pink to clusters of blossoms scattered through the tree, keeping many flowers white so the pink looks airy.
- 4Paint the river with pale blue and the mountain with sky blue, then fill the hills, bushes and grass with grass green and lime green.
- 5Use bright red on the woodpecker's head and the lovebirds' heads, and sky blue on the lovebirds' wings.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker green to the pine trees and a touch of warm brown in the shadowed trunk for depth.
