Swooping right toward you is a big, smiling bat with huge ears and wide-open wings, while several more bats flutter around a rocky cave opening. Inside the dark cave, dozens of tiny bats are packed together, so little ones have lots to spot and count. Outside, more bats glide through a cloudy sky toward a round sun low over distant hills. A calm lake fills the lower right, with a few evergreen trees on the far shore, and cattails and grasses fill the bottom corners. The wing panels are great for practicing careful shading. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sky and water: fill the open sky and lake areas with sky blue, leaving the fluffy clouds white.
- 2Color the setting sun and its glow with golden yellow, then add royal blue to the distant hills.
- 3Fill the big bat bodies and small bats' faces with peach, and add coral pink to the inner ears.
- 4Color the bat wings with taupe gray, then shade the cliff and rocks with light gray.
- 5Add lime green and leaf green to the bushes, grass, and cattails along the bottom.
- 6Optional: Leave the cave opening dark and add dusty brown to the cave bats' shadows for depth.
