Cheerful Dragonfly Sitting on a Tall Cattail

Coloring guide
At the very top of a tall cattail sits a happy dragonfly with big round eyes, a little smile and two curly antennae. This free printable coloring page gives it four wings spread wide, and simple vein lines split each one into roomy sections that small hands can fill in easily. The long body is made of neat rounded segments, and you can spot its tiny legs gripping the cattail head. Pointed blades of grass rise on both sides, and a thin stem runs down to the bottom of the page. Bold outlines and open spaces make it a good pick for preschoolers and early elementary kids. Shimmery blues and greens look nice on the wings, and a bright striped body plus a brown cattail will help the dragonfly pop. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big brown cattail head and fill it with cattail brown, leaving the thin edge lines clean.
- 2Color the two tall grass blades and the short blades and the stem with grass green.
- 3Fill the dragonfly head and thorax with sky blue, keeping the big eyes white with a small black dot for the shine.
- 4Color both pairs of wings with pale ice blue, then add the wing veins with a slightly deeper touch if you like.
- 5Color the abdomen rings by alternating deep blue and medium blue, and leave a few rings in pale ice blue for a fresh look.
- 6Optional: Add a little shading along the edges of the cattail and the wings with a darker shade of the same color for extra depth.
