This plump little hen is drawn in profile, looking to the left. She has a big round eye, a small pointed beak and a wavy comb on her head, with a wattle hanging under the beak. Scalloped feathers ruffle around her neck like a collar. Her rounded body carries one large wing with layered feather tips, and a fanned tail curves up behind her with several feathers. Two sturdy legs finish in wide, three-toed feet, and simple grass tufts sit in the bottom corners. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the hen's body, neck, head, and tail feathers with warm brown, leaving the eye white unpainted.
- 2Color the large wing in light cream, working from the top edge down to the feather tips.
- 3Paint the comb and both wattles under the beak in coral red.
- 4Color the beak, the lower beak, and both feet in golden yellow, and fill the upper parts of the legs with light cream.
- 5Leave the eye white and the background, including the space between the legs, white so the page stays bright.
- 6Optional: add a few small darker brown strokes on the body and wing to give a feathery, shaded look.
