Young Horse Nibbling Grass

Coloring guide
With its head lowered, this young horse is munching on a few tufts of grass. It has big round eyes, a friendly smile and two pointed ears. A long wavy mane falls over the forehead and down the neck, the tail hangs behind, and all four legs end in plain hooves. Small grass clumps sit around its feet, with a bigger patch right under its nose. Thick outlines and roomy shapes work well for preschoolers and early elementary kids who are still building pencil control, and the page is free to print. A chestnut coat with a golden mane is a nice choice, and two or three greens for the grass keep it from looking flat. It would also suit a quiet farm-animal lesson or a rainy afternoon. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the horse's body, legs, and face in caramel brown, leaving the background and the gaps between the legs white.
- 2Color the long mane, the top tuft, the tail, and the lower tail in golden yellow, following the flowing strands.
- 3Fill the inside of the left ear with soft pink and the outer ears with caramel brown.
- 4Color all four hooves in dark gray, keeping the rest of the legs brown.
- 5Leave the eye whites and the small background patches near the grass white, then add the dark pupils and nostrils.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker brown along the belly and under the legs to make the horse look rounder.
