Daisy Perch for a Smiling Butterfly

In the middle of a large daisy stands a cheerful butterfly with a round smiling face and two curly antennae. Its wings are open wide, with oval petal-shaped sections and circles of different sizes along the outer edges, just right for small hands. The striped body and thin legs rest on the flower's round center. Underneath, the daisy's wide petals fan out, and a long straight stem has two leaves near the bottom. Bold lines and roomy shapes make it easy for preschoolers and early elementary kids using crayons or chunky markers. Bright purple, orange and yellow would suit the wing circles, and a soft pink on the petals will help the butterfly stand out. Print it free for a spring activity at home or in class. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the flower center, the two antenna tips, and the top body segments with golden yellow, leaving the small gaps around the legs white.
- 2Color the daisy petals and the outer edges of the top wings with rose pink, keeping the flower center untouched.
- 3Use soft pink for the inner panels of the top wings and the inner panels of the lower wings' upper section.
- 4Color the lower wings with violet purple on the outer band and light lavender on the inner panels, then fill the round spots on the wings in golden yellow and tangerine orange.
- 5Fill the two leaves and the flower stem with leaf green, then color the lower body segments and the head in tangerine orange and golden yellow as shown.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading along one side of each petal and wing to make the colors look more lively; leave the legs and background white.
