Friendly Caterpillar and Butterfly Under the Sun

Up near the top of the page, a happy butterfly flutters along with big sparkly eyes, a wide grin and curly antennae. Below it, a friendly caterpillar smiles back from a large leaf that has a center vein and side veins. The caterpillar has a round segmented body, little feet and two ball-tipped antennae. The butterfly's wings are full of big circles, small dots and rounded ovals, so there's plenty to fill in. A simple sun with short rays sits in the upper right corner. Thick lines and large shapes make this a good match for preschoolers and early elementary kids with crayons or chunky markers. Purple and pink would look great on the wings, with a sunny yellow sun and fresh green for the leaf and the caterpillar. It's a handy free printable for a spring or life cycle lesson. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the big leaf with grass green, then color the leaf's left edge the same way.
- 2Color the caterpillar's head and its lighter body segments with pale lime green, and the darker middle segments with forest green.
- 3Paint the butterfly's wing borders soft purple, and fill the wing areas with rose pink and orchid pink.
- 4Color the butterfly's head sunny yellow, its body top with bright orange and its lower body with golden orange.
- 5Fill the sun, the wing spots, the caterpillar's feet and antenna balls with sunny yellow, and the small wing dots with sky blue.
- 6Optional: Leave the eye shines and the curl of the butterfly's antenna white, and add a little shading on the leaf for depth.
