This big steam locomotive comes chugging straight at you, and a smiling engineer in a cap waves from the cab's side window. Puffy smoke billows from the wide funnel stack, with a bell and a round headlamp on top of the boiler. The cowcatcher up front has lots of vertical stripes for little hands to fill. Passenger cars trail behind on the left. Around the tracks are tall saguaro cacti, a prickly pear with round pads, small desert plants and rocks, flat-topped rock formations far off, and a bright sun with rays above. Large shapes plus fine details suit kids who like a bit of a challenge. Dark blue or green could go on the engine, with warm orange and sandy yellow for the rocks. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sky: color the sky areas around the sun, the mesas and the clouds in sky blue and pale blue, leaving the big smoke cloud and the headlamp glass white.
- 2Fill the desert ground and sand patches with sandy yellow, and color the mesas and rock formations in coral and brick red.
- 3Color the smokestack top band and the bell in golden yellow, then paint the smokestack body and the cab details with charcoal gray and red.
- 4Add the boiler in royal blue and the big smokebox door and boiler front in charcoal gray, keeping the wheel hub center white.
- 5Use cactus green for the cacti and prickly pear pads, and chocolate brown for the railroad ties.
- 6Optional: finish the cowcatcher slats in red and the engineer's jacket in ochre for a bold, cheerful look.
