Dozing Koala in a Tree Fork

Coloring guide
Nestled in the V-shaped fork of a big tree trunk, a fluffy koala naps with its eyes closed and a little smile. The round ears are tufted with fur, the paws rest on its belly and the head tilts gently to one side. Eucalyptus branches hang around it with long leaves, gumnuts and fuzzy blossoms, and two small birds perch on a branch at the upper right. Behind the tree, a hazy valley of treetops stretches toward distant hills. The bark has lots of lines and textured patches, which makes it handy practice for shading. Soft grays and warm browns suit the koala's fur, fresh greens fit the leaves, and a bright pink or yellow could be saved for the blossoms. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the koala's fur, head, arms, legs and ears in light gray, leaving the cream belly and the inner top ear for the next step.
- 2Fill the koala's belly and the inner part of the top ear with cream white, and color the nose and eyes' outline area in charcoal gray, keeping the small eye-shine areas white.
- 3Paint the tree trunks and branches in tan brown and light tan, following the bark lines and shading the darker grooves in tan brown.
- 4Color the leaves in leaf green, lime green and forest green, mixing them so the foliage looks natural, and use sage green for a few leaves near the bottom right.
- 5Add the muted blue hills and the lime and forest green bushes in the background, leaving the sky and the top right branches white.
- 6Optional: Add a little extra shading on the koala's fur with the light gray pencil or marker to make the fluffy texture stand out.
