This cartoon dragonfly has big round eyes, an open-mouth smile and two curly antennae, and it swoops low over a pond. Each of the four large wings is split into sections by simple lines, and the long tail is cut into chunky stripes, so there's lots for little hands to color. Circular ripples spread across the water below, with two lily pads floating close by. A pair of cattails stands on the left, growing out of the pond among tall, pointed leaves. The bold outlines and roomy shapes work well for preschoolers and early elementary kids. You could do the wings in light blue and purple, the tail in green and yellow stripes, then finish with brown cattail tops and green lily pads. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill both large wings and the smaller wings on the right with sky blue, leaving the thin vein lines white.
- 2Color the two lily pads and the thick body of the dragonfly's thorax with grass green.
- 3Color the dragonfly's head and the lower part of its face with lime green and pale green, leaving the big eye whites white.
- 4Color the tail segments with a pattern: lime green, medium green, leaf green, and grass green, working from the body toward the tip.
- 5Fill the cattail heads with chocolate brown and the grass blades with leaf green, keeping the cattail stems white.
- 6Finish with a golden yellow dot on the antenna tip. Optional: add a little darker shading on the lily pads and grass for depth.
