A wooden rail fence runs behind them, and a barn with an X-braced door sits off in the distance. The background also holds a leafy tree, puffy clouds, bushes and a haystack, and flowers and grass tufts frame the corners. Layered tail feathers on the rooster and scalloped feathers on every bird mean plenty of detail, which suits steady crayon or colored pencil work. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the two clouds in the sky with sky blue, leaving the background around them white.
- 2Color the grass, bushes, and plants with leaf green, then fill the dirt ground with sandy tan.
- 3Paint the hens and rooster bodies in golden yellow, adding rust brown and caramel brown on the darker wings and the bottom left hen.
- 4Color the rooster tail with deep teal, emerald green, forest green, and navy blue, and fill the barn roof and comb with bright red.
- 5Optional: Add a little burnt orange on the rooster chest and light orange on the beak, leaving the fence and tree trunk details as simple outlines.
