Preening Flamingo on a Little Pond Island With Cattails

A fluffy flamingo balances on two long, thin legs and curls its neck around to tuck its beak into the chest feathers, a classic preening pose. Rows of scalloped feathers cover the body, so there's plenty to color. It has a round eye with a little shine, and its webbed feet are planted on a small grassy island with tufts of grass, surrounded by rippling water. Tall cattails with long leaves stand on both sides, and behind them is a calm pond with a few puffy bushes on the far shore. Bold, clean lines suit younger kids, while the feather detail keeps older kids busy. Try bright pink and coral on the feathers, deeper pink on the wing layers, green reeds and soft blue water. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the flamingo body and wings using bright pink, leaving the small white gap between the legs and the white curve inside the neck untouched.
- 2Color the long wing feathers in rose pink and pale pink, alternating between them so the wing looks layered.
- 3Fill the legs, knees, feet and toes with coral, keeping the knees a touch darker for detail.
- 4Color the beak pale pink and add a charcoal gray tip at the bottom.
- 5Use lime green for the grass island and the small tufts, then forest green for the bushes in the background.
- 6Fill the pond with sky blue and finish the reeds and cattails with leaf green and cattail brown. Optional: add a little darker pink under the wings for shading.
