Three horses have their heads down grazing in a grassy pasture: a large mare in the middle with a smaller foal on either side. Their manes are drawn in long, flowing strokes that are fun to color. A wooden fence crosses the scene behind them, and a big gambrel-roof barn with X-trimmed doors and a small cupola topped with a rooster weathervane stands beside a tall windmill. Leafy trees and puffy clouds fill the background, three birds cross the sky, and two hens peck at the ground near the fence on the right. Flowers and tufts of grass cover the foreground. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by coloring the sky and distant hills with a pale sky blue, leaving the fluffy clouds and the bird in white.
- 2Fill the big red barn walls and roof with barn red, keeping the window panes and door lines white.
- 3Color the horses' bodies and legs with caramel brown, then add chestnut brown to the manes, tails and the shaded parts of the foals.
- 4Paint the grass and grassy patches with lime green, and use leafy green for the trees, bushes and the lower-left shrubs.
- 5Add steel blue to the windmill tail, golden tan to the fence posts and rails, and caramel brown to the chickens.
- 6Optional: Leave small white highlights in the horses' manes and eyes so they look shiny and lively.
