Ribbon Dancing Monkey for Chinese New Year

Balanced on one leg on a round, scalloped stage, a smiling little monkey swirls two long ribbons around its body in a playful dance. One hand holds a ribbon stick high and the other holds a second stick low, so the ribbons loop and curl across the whole page. Three paper lanterns with tassels hang from a leafy branch overhead, giving it a festive Chinese New Year feel. Small bushes and tufts of grass sit behind the stage. Big round ears, a curly tail and a round tummy patch are all easy to color in. The wide ribbon loops are great for little hands practicing smooth strokes. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the monkey's skin areas in peach skin: face, belly, both hands, the raised foot, and the inner parts of both ears.
- 2Next, fill the monkey's fur in warm brown: the top of the head, ear rims, arms, raised leg, and the curly tail.
- 3Color the long ribbon loops in bright red, and use coral pink for the band on the left side. Leave the small gaps of background white.
- 4Fill the three round lanterns and the lantern tassels in bright red, then color the leaves in leaf green on the branch.
- 5Color the top of the round platform in golden yellow, and the scalloped front band in sky blue and bright red, alternating the scallops.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading on the brown fur and the lower edges of the ribbons. Keep the eye whites, the teeth, and the background white.
