Hovering Hummingbird Sipping from Big Trumpet Flowers

A tiny hummingbird hangs in mid-air with wings spread wide and its long beak dipped into a big trumpet-shaped flower at the top right. Its round eye looks bright and friendly. You can spot small scalloped feathers on the chest, a fanned tail and tiny feet tucked underneath. More blossoms with long stamens, a closed bud on a stem and plenty of pointed leaves fill the bottom and sides. Each wing feather is a separate section, so you can color them one at a time. Graduated greens and blues look great on the wings, with soft pinks or purples on the petals to make the bird stand out. Bold, clear outlines suit preschoolers and early elementary kids, and older children can add detail with colored pencils. Free to print. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the hummingbird: fill the body, chest and neck feathers with mint green, then add lime green to the lower wing part, leaving the eye white empty.
- 2Color the wing feathers and the tail with turquoise blue, and use soft teal for the lower tail feathers.
- 3Fill the big flower in the middle with golden yellow, petals and all, keeping the tiny white highlights bare.
- 4Color the left flower and its petals with coral pink, and the bud at the top with bright red and olive green at its base.
- 5Paint all the leaves and stems with leaf green, using lime green for the leaves near the top right, and pale cream for the leaf at the bottom left. Leave the background white.
- 6Optional: add a charcoal gray beak and a few darker lines on the leaves and petals for depth.
