Paper Cutting Craft Time for Chinese New Year

Coloring guide
A smiling boy and a girl with a ponytail sit side by side at a craft table, both holding scissors and snipping out paper shapes. He's cutting a flower and she's cutting a little fish. The table has stacked sheets of paper, more finished flowers and fish, and scattered triangle scraps. Behind them, a window with fluffy clouds outside has a string of paper fish and flowers pinned up with clothespins. Big shapes and clear outlines suit preschoolers and early elementary kids, while the scissors and small scraps give older children something to color with care. Bright orange or red fish and pink or yellow flowers will show up well against a soft blue window. A free printable that works for a rainy afternoon or a classroom craft day. Looking for more? A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the skin: color the faces, hands, and ears peach skin, and leave the eye whites and the little white shine dots in the eyes white.
- 2Color the window sky and the blue paper under the fish in light sky blue, then fill the bushes outside with leaf green.
- 3Color the boy's hair and the window frames chocolate brown, the boy's shirt denim blue, and the girl's shirt rose pink, with her hair and ponytail in golden yellow.
- 4Fill the paper cards in golden yellow and the cut fish in coral red, and color the hanging flowers lavender purple and rose pink. Keep the big flower petals on the boy's card white and color only its center golden yellow.
- 5Finish the table: color the paper stacks golden yellow and rose pink, the bottom flowers rose pink with golden yellow centers, the fish golden yellow or coral red, and the small paper scraps turquoise or sky blue.
- 6Optional: add a few lighter strokes of golden yellow or sky blue over the hair and sky to give the colors a soft, layered look.
