Mother giraffe lowers her long neck to look at her little calf, and they're both smiling. The baby stands on skinny, wobbly legs with its head tipped up toward her. Its small tail ends in a tuft, with a few motion marks beside it so it looks like it's swishing. Both have big round spots, little horn-like ossicones and large friendly eyes. Grass tufts cover the ground around their hooves, and a small flower sits in each bottom corner. Large spots and open space make this an easy free printable for preschoolers and early elementary kids. Golden yellow coats with light orange or brown spots look nice, plus green grass and bright flowers. Using a softer shade on the baby can help show which one is the calf. Looking for more? A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big shapes: fill the mother giraffe's body, neck and legs and the calf's head and body with golden yellow, leaving the white highlights on the legs and the grass background white.
- 2Color the mother's outer ear with peach and the calf's ears with soft pink, keeping the eye whites white.
- 3Use warm brown for the large spots on the mother's neck, body and hips, plus the mother's mane and the calf's spots along its neck and sides.
- 4Fill the hooves, the tail tufts and the little horn-like tips on both heads with dark chocolate brown.
- 5Add burnt orange to the calf's neck patch and the patch on its side, and pale yellow to the calf's lower leg patch for a soft glow.
- 6Optional: Add a little extra warm brown along the shadow side of the mother's neck and legs to make the drawing feel more rounded.
