In this cozy barn scene, a big smiling mother pig glances back over her shoulder while five tiny piglets snuggle up to her belly to nurse. The piglets are lined in a row, mostly turned away from us, so their curly tails and floppy ears show. The one on the far left tips its head up with a happy closed-eye smile. Mama lies on a bed of loose straw, and behind her is a wooden plank fence with knotholes and a horizontal rail. Large shapes and bold lines make it a nice choice for younger kids practicing how to stay inside the lines. Try soft pink on the pigs, golden yellow on the hay and warm brown on the fence boards. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the barn background: fill the wooden planks and the horizontal beam with warm wood brown, letting the plank lines and knots guide your strokes.
- 2Fill the big mama pig body and all five piglets with soft baby pink, keeping the eye whites and small highlights white.
- 3Add coral pink to the mama pig's snout, both of her ears and the piglets' ears for a warmer, darker contrast.
- 4Color the straw bedding at the bottom with pale straw yellow, then add golden yellow patches along the edges around the pigs and amber orange on the hay at the left.
- 5Optional: add a little extra coral pink shading under the pigs and along the edges of the body to give them some roundness.
